On December 20, 2006 a rather severe Blizzard hit Colorado and surrounding states. It pretty much ground Colorado to a full stop. Please go to my trail blogging site (opens a new window) for a full description of the event.

Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > I took these pictures right after I got home (loosely speaking : ). So, it's much worse now (which is why they sent us home early). They are expecting winds up to 35 mph and 2-3 feet of snow (poor Robert and Lindy, I might drive out tomorrow, if I don't have to work, just for fun : ) I'll take some tomorrow morning so I have some "before" and "after" photos.

So, this is what it looked like from just outside my apartment on Thursday morning (the first 4 photos are all prior to sunrise). Pretty deep. And, to make matters worse, fairly heavy with water (so, not light fluffy stuff : )
Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > And this is what Drake looked like. They had been able to keep it plowed, but there was not much in the way of traffic for 2 reasons. First, look at the above picture. Next, except for the main roads (Drake, College, Lemay, and the like) all other road were completely unplowed. They would remain that way for the entire day. So, since almost no one could get out to the very few plowed roads (much less out the driveway : ), there weren't many vehicles driving around.
Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > Another shot. Some nice snow sculptures. Most of what you see here stayed that way pretty much all day (and most of the next). Some people spent the entire day attempting to get out. Only about 6 made it out of their immediate parking space. Of those 6, only 3 made it out to the plowed road. It was difficult for all the people to understand why their 4 wheel drive jeeps, SUVs, etc., could not get through the snow. I got out after about an hour's worth of work, but that's because I had chains. Most people with 4 wheel drive do NOT have chains. Even with chains it was a little tricky. I'll pick up another set this year so I can have all tires in chains. Eventually I'll get some lockers installed. I could have made several hundred dollars towing people 50-100 yards to the plowed road : )

Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > The only exit out of the entire apartment complex. There are another couple of big pickups with 4 wheel drive and really big snow tires. Also, they got out early when the snow was not as warm. The parking directly ahead (at the Sunflower market) had been plowed (barely). That's where I eventually parked my truck. See the greenish SUV on the right side of the picture? He tried ALL day long to get out. ALLLL DAY. See how far he had to backup to get to the place where people had already gone? 6-8 feet? After 8 hours of work with a shovel (and, yes, he had 4 wheel drive) he managed to get out. Warmish, heavy snow.

Here is what the Sunflower market parking area looked like. So, not exactly clean of snow, but they got a few places scraped clean. No, no stores opened here all day.
