Geoff Weatherford (geoffw)  > Utah Trail Hiking > Hole in the Rock Mormon Expedition Trail, Utah, May 1, 2001
This was a 4 wheel vehicle trip down in southern Utah along a trail created by Mormon immigrants. Go to my trail and rafting web site (opens a new window) for a complete description of the trip. But you can review all the high quality photos here.

Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > Here is where we unpacked the vehicles, got the gear all straightened out, and made final plans. This is right off Hwy 276 about 10 miles east of Halls Crossing (where you can catch the ferry across the Colorado River). If I remember correctly, there is a very small airport nearby. I think this is where we connected with the Morman Hole in the Rock Expedition trail. You had to head off south on a dirt road for a while and then that intersected the main trail (also known as Rec Road 450, I think) where you start heading SW. We did not get very far along the road before we met our one and only (to the best of my memory) jeep group. They were just getting back from where we were heading and let us know that we were in for some excitement (which everyone except for me were fully aware of : )
Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > Somewhere along the "trail". Some of us had brought our bikes along in case the trail turned out to be "ride-able". I did not partake of any such exercise, but others did.
Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > The road was not too bad for the first few miles. Lots of flat gravelly stretches, then sandy areas, then over a slickrock ridge, down the other side, rinse and repeat. You had to be careful and could not go too fast, but nothing too bad.
Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > Bill Marquardt's jeep on slickrock.
Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > Our first night camp. Kinda exposed and windy, but otherwise a nice place. Lots of empty country out there.
Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > Bill taking a ledge. Looked hairy to me, but they all seemed to think it was great fun.
Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > The infamous "chute". This is known far and wide as a little "interesting". You can still see grooves in the rock from the ropes/cables used by the Mormons to pull the wagons up and over. I was not looking forward to coming back thru here : ) If I had been by myself (which you should never do) in my Toyota pickyp, this is where I would have turned back.
Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > From a distance, this little stretch of the road does not look too bad. But, it's very narrow, and there is one place that is jusssssstttt a little tricky.
Geoff Weatherford (geoffw) > Bill's jeep takes it in stripe.
